Before 1976 the ‘Ulster Rally' road closing order was used each year by a different club. The ANICC found the annual allocation of this order a constant friction between member clubs and no club could ever build an event with any certainty of it having a future.

In 1976 a consortium of interested clubs was established by the ANICC to use the order and promote the ‘Ulster Rally'. There would now be continuity and a future for the Ulster Rally. This system was partially successful and the Ulster Rally did start to gain a reputation and a position in major championships but some clubs then pulled out of the organising group and the event was again under threat by 1980. The problems reverted to the senior officers of the ANICC who took over the management and, late in the day, did deliver a successful 1980 Ulster Rally.

Another concept was born and in 1981 the ANICC supported the formation of The Northern Ireland Motor Club Ltd. This time the organising body was made up not by clubs but by people. Every club in the ANICC was ‘invited' to ‘second' a senior official to the new club, and many did.

The NIMC would promote the Ulster Rally and any other occasional event that the ANICC wished to host, but nothing else. NIMC would not be in competition with other ANICC member clubs but it would build and sustain a major rally with all the attendant advantages to the other clubs of involvement, training, and experience from a higher level. Local competitors and spectators would also be able to sit alongside world class competition in an environment primarily concerned with the promotion of safe and enjoyable events.

The NIMC has been at the forefront of innovative thinking; several of its ideas have been accepted by the MSA as mandatory or as examples of good practice.  Through a series of initiatives the Club supports the wider training of officials and marshals and fully supports the work of the Motorsport Marshalling Partnership.

The NIMC has working meetings every month of the year and welcomes feedback and fresh ideas from anyone, competitors, event officials and marshals; the people it was formed to represent through the promotion of the Ulster Rally.
